2020 march: Argentina/Patagonia Los Glaciares

The next morning we crossed the border to Argentina and drove 750 km south to El Chalten, in the Los Glaciers National Park.

El Chalten

We stayed here for 3 nights and two full days. You can actually spend a week in this place, because the many hiking destinations at the foot of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy are diverse. El Chalten is heavily frequented by tourists, but if you start your hike before sunrise, you will be back when the masses of guided tours start around 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and can enjoy the beauty of the landscape in seclusion and alone. We started our first tour (there and back 20 km and 500 m difference in altitude) to the Laguna / CerroTorre at around 4 a.m., to be at the lagoon at 6 a.m. with sunrise and the second tour (there and back 24 km and 1100 m difference in altitude) to Fitz Roy at 2 a.m. We had a fantastic sunrise on the first tour, but unfortunately pouring rain on the second tour. The weather can change very quickly here.

Calafate Glacier, Lakes and Cordilleras

We left El Chalten towards Calafate. The place is famous for the Perito Moreno glacier. We went on a guided glacier tour, took some photos and quickly left this place. It has been exploited for tourism and totally overrun. Nothing for me!!!
